Continuing Professional Development

CSEM’s Continuing Professional Development mission is to enhance the quality of health care for individuals with endocrine and metabolic disorders by increasing the knowledge, competence, and/or performance of care providers for these disorders, including current screening, diagnostic, clinical management strategies, and research.

CSEM offers our members a variety of Section 1 and Section 3 accredited events for free, and available for non-members for a fee.

Maintenance of Certification

CSEM is an accredited provider of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Sections 1 and 3 approved credits for the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). We offer our members a variety of ways to stay up to date on the latest research and best clinical practice in the field of endocrinology and metabolism. As a member physician you can find programs to earn credits in all three sections of the RCPSC MOC framework.

Please note, the annual deadline to submit activities for MOC credits is January 31st of the following year to report your previous year activities.

Goals

Conduct needs assessments that capture the perceived and unperceived needs of healthcare professionals as determined by self-perception, input from patients, and communities of practice.

Create and support high-quality and timely accredited education programs that reflect CanMEDS competencies and are linked to results from the needs assessments.

Assess the impact of education programs on CSEM members’ clinical knowledge, competence and performance.

Group Learning Activities

Section 1 Group Activities include Knowledge, skills and abilities acquired through group or team learning activities, including collaborative interprofessional and patient partner activities.

Activities must be interactive through opportunities for discussion and can be in-person or virtual.

Our programs include the following Section 1 accredited activities.

CSEM Webinars

CSEM runs regular webinars with experts in endocrinology across Canada and internationally.

CSEM Accredited Events

CSEM collaborates with other medical education providers to co-develop accredited programs that are of interest to endocrinologists, ensuring high quality and scientifically independent education.

Diabetes Canada/CSEM Professional Conference

Each year CSEM works with Diabetes Canada to develop an educational program for an in-person event bringing together hundreds of endocrinologists and other health care professionals from across the country.

See our calendar for our latest events.

Individual Learning

Section 2 activities are generally self-directed, but CSEM also has materials to help you claim Section 2 credits.

Recorded Webinars

If you are not able to attend our webinars live and engage in their interactive content, members are still able to access recordings.

Feedback and Improvement

The MOC program requires a minimum of 25 credits for Section 3 per five-year cycle, which must include one (1) “Feedback Received” activity (reduced from minimum 25 credits for Section 1 and Section 2).

Under this category, CSEM offers valuable accredited self-assessment programs as well as simulation activities.

Our programs include the following Section 3 activities.

Knowledge Transfer Activities (KTAs)

These Section 3 Self-Assessment webinars allow our physician members to assess their knowledge through pre- and post-test polling questions, with feedback and reflection tools provided after the event.

Workshops

CSEM regularly holds Section 3 accredited in-person workshops at our Professional Conference that allow attendees to receive immediate feedback from experts to enhance quality improvement.

Simulation Activities

CSEM occasionally runs simulation activities to allow practice with new technologies and tools useful to endocrinologists.

CSEM members can also earn Section 3 credits through committee participation and guideline development. For more information, see the committee page of this website.

CSEM accredits programs in two different ways, depending on if the partnering organization is a physician organization.

Accrediting a Program

What is a Physician Organization?

To see if your organization qualifies as a physician organization, it must check the following boxes:

  • Be not-for-profit.
  • Have a governance structure such as a Board of Directors.
  • Have a membership comprised of individual specialist physicians
  • Be accountable to a membership comprised of individual physicians

Proposal as a Physician Organization

If you’re able to check all of these boxes, then the accreditation process is pretty straightforward. Simply submit a Proposal for Accredited Activities and our CPD Committee will review it. They may suggest modifications before it is accepted.

Once the proposal is accepted, you need to submit an application form with supporting documentation for final review by CSEM’s CPD committee and subject experts (if needed) to ensure the program is scientifically sound and in compliance with accreditation standards. Changes may be required before accreditation is granted. Once the CPD Committee agrees that the application meets CSEM’s standards, then congratulations your event is now accredited!

Co-develop as a non-physician organization

If you are not a physician organization, you can still partner with CSEM to develop an educational program. Here is a brief outline of the process.

The Co-Development Process

  1. Identify Learning Needs
Any program we accredit must address a learning need of endocrinologists. Industry partners are welcome to provide their own learning needs data, or we can choose a topic based on CSEM’s own learning assessments.
  2. Submit a proposal to co-develop an activity.
The proposal will be reviewed by CSEM’s CPD committee who may suggest modifications before it is accepted.
  3. Agreement
If accepted, CSEM and the co-developer sign an agreement outlining mutual responsibilities for the development and delivery of the program, CSEM accreditation and fees, activity budget and how funds will be managed.
  4. Content developed by SPC
Once the agreement has been signed by both parties, a scientific planning committee is appointed, with a CSEM-appointed representative, to develop the program content.
  5. CSEM reviews final application
    • The SPC submits an application form with supporting documentation for final review by CSEM’s CPD committee and subject experts (if needed) to ensure the program is scientifically sound and in compliance with accreditation standards. Changes may be required before accreditation is granted.

After the program is complete, you’ll receive a report of the event from us including evaluation data, numbers of attendees, and the slide deck.
