Students of CSEM

Canadian trainees enrolled in Internal Medicine, Pediatric, or in any other specialty program with an interest in endocrinology and metabolism, would join as a Student of CSEM member.  Become a Student of CSEM member.

Residents

Canadian trainees enrolled in an adult or pediatric endocrinology and metabolism training program would join as a Resident member. Become a Resident member

Membership fees are complimentary for trainees. To maintain your complimentary membership, you are required to update your profile with CSEM on an annual basis.

Dr. Sonia Salisbury Resident Clinical Vignette Award

In 1974 the CSEM began negotiations with the Royal College to examine the issue of certification examinations in the subspecialty of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Former president, Dr. Sonia Salisbury, played a major role in the development of this certification process, and Dr. Keith Dawson recalls that the development of a Royal College specialty in endocrinology was a major reason for the founding of the CSEM. Sonia Salisbury points out, “the specialty exam has actually been a unifying influence for Canadian clinical endocrinology, and this influence will undoubtedly increase with time”.

2024 Dr. Sonia Salisbury Resident Clinical Vignette Award winners
The Dr. Sonia Salisbury Resident Clinical Vignette Award recognizes two trainees with the highest-ranked oral resident clinical vignettes presented at the Diabetes Canada/CSEM Professional Conference. Submit your abstract.

Award: $500 honoraria and certificate

Eligibility:
  • Submissions must be for the CSEM Resident Abstract Stream (Clinical Vignettes) of the 2025 Diabetes Canada/CSEM Professional Conference.
  • The presenting author is a CSEM Trainee Member (Complimentary membership).
  • The presenting author is identified as a trainee in the abstract submission.
  • The award application task is completed when submitting an abstract.
  • The presenting author delivers their presentation before their assigned judge.

Dr. Sonia Salisbury graduated at the top of her class at McGill School of Medicine and went on to be the only pediatric endocrinologist in the Maritimes. She was a trailblazer for young women in medicine and had a significant impact on the lives and work of many people. She was awarded multiple recognitions and served a CSEM President. She was a consummate clinician, on-call 24 hours a day for the diabetes program, tirelessly caring for her many patients. She passed away at the age of 86.

An internationally renowned and respected clinician and researcher, in 1964 John Dupre showed that intestinal factors regulate insulin secretion, which led to discovery of incretins (metabolic hormones that stimulate a decrease in blood glucose levels). He will be remembered by the diabetes community as world class scientist.  He passed away at the age of 90.

The Dr. Charles Hollenberg Award recognizes the trainee with the highest-ranked oral or poster basic science /translational research project presented at the at the Diabetes Canada/CSEM Professional Conference. Submit your abstract.

A member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, Dr. Hollenberg is most notably recognized for his fundamental role in academic medicine and research.  His study of lipid metabolism significantly impacted the subspecialty of endocrinology and metabolism. He passed away at the age of 73.

CSEM Quality Improvement Award

One $500 honorarium and certificate awarded to the PGY6 Fellow who presents the highest ranked completed oral or poster quality improvement project at the Diabetes Canada/CSEM Annual Professional Conference. The online submission form for all abstracts is here.
